It’s that time of year when we’re all making resolutions, joining gyms, shocking our bodies with exercise and crash diets – well some of us are…
And yet, we all know – don’t we – that most resolutions just don’t stick.
The gym membership lapses – or doesn’t even get taken up.
The new exercise regime is forgotten by month’s end.
As for the diet…
And the same goes for all too many of our other goals, be they to travel more, spend less time on social media, see our friends more often, whatever.
The thing is, it’s not enough to just identify something we want, and then put it out there. We need to bring that goal into our everyday lives, day in week out. And the way to do that is to scale down our goals to much smaller chunks, then to next steps.
Don’t get me wrong: I think Goals Are Good. It’s what most of us do – or rather don’t do – with them that seems to be seriously flawed. And that’s about translating the goals into clearly defined next steps – things to do this month, this week, today.
So stop and think – what is the immediate next step that will help you progress towards your most important goal?
How long will it take to complete that next step? When will you do it? Why isn’t it in your calendar yet?
